There Are A Few Reasons Why A Puppy Will Eat Poop

Their age, their training, their living conditions and their diet can all play a part in these reasons.

Eating poop is also known coprophagia.

Here is a run down:

Your Dog Was Born To Eat Poop

  • Once upon a time in the history of the dog, they used to eat their own feces. This was purely because they needed to do anything to survive as food was scarce. So don’t fear, its often simply instinctual and normal. When a dog has puppies she will often clean up after her little ones to keep her “den” clean.
  • Sometimes in a household with a few dogs – you find that the submissive dog will eat the dominant dogs poop.

Scolding Your Dog For Pooping In The House

  • If you are one of those people who believe you can train a dog not to poop in the house by rubbing their nose in the poop (NOTE – this is NOT a good way of training your dog). They might try and get “rid” of the evidence the next time they poo – so that they don’t get into trouble again.

Cleaning Up After Themselves

  • If your puppy watches you clean up their poo, they might think they are helping you the next time they clean up after themselves.

Copied Behavior

  • If your puppy has watched another puppy eat poo, they might mimic their behavior and do it too.

Learning

  • Eating poop may simply be a learning experience.  Puppies learn things by putting anything and everything in their mouth.

Health Reasons

  • Sometimes a dog will start eating poop when they don’t have enough nutrients, if they are developing parasites, or even have a problem with their pancreas.

  • In a household of dogs, sometimes you find that if there is one sick dog, the dog who isn’t sick would eat the sick dogs poop so that “predators” don’t find out that the other dog is sick. Basically protecting the sick dog. Beautiful isn’t it.

If You Find Your Dog Preferring Dog Poop To Dog Food

  • Sometimes a dog eats their poop to get more enzymes which help the dogs digestive system work. Dogs need a amount specific enzymes to digest carbs, proteins and fats and sometimes they don’t get enough of this in their diet.

  • They say that a lack of Vitamin B is also a cause for a puppy to eat poo.

Overfeeding

  • If you overfeed your puppy, their digestive system can’t digest all the nutrients at once, so then they “re-eat” by eating their poo which would be full of nutrients that their body didn’t initially process.

Attention:

  • If you scold your dog for eating their poo, you might find that you dog would eat poo on purpose just to get your attention. This attention may be negative – but attention is attention. (still sad)
  • Some dogs may also just be bored and play around and eat it to pass time.
