How much Water Should Your Dog Be Drinking?

Remember the first important step to take is to change your dogs water at least once a day. MINIMUM. Once in the morning and once at night is best, especially if their water bowl is outside. Just like a human, its always nice to drink clean fresh water when you’re thirsty or hot from the sun.

They say a dogs body weight is more than 60%. So it is important to keep your pup hydrated at all times. Dogs can suffer from dehydration – just like humans do.

Of course, your dogs age, weight and activity levels play a role in how much water your dog would need to drink.

They say on average a dog will drink anywhere between 50 and 100ml of water per KG of body weight.

Water is the key to being healthy. Water helps your body and your brain function well – which in turn helps you get nutrients into the body.

If you would feel more comfortable, you could measure how much your dog is drinking by placing a water bowl (in the shade or inside) with a certain amount of water and see after a set amount of hours how much is left.

Do this over a few days to get an average – this will give you an idea. But if your dog is healthy and happy I’m sure there is nothing to worry about.

There is a lot of water in the blood stream, so really speaking the water helps your dog get oxygen to all the necessary parts of the body. And of course, it will help flush out toxins in the body.

Something important to know is a dog will pant when they are hot. By doing this they will be losing water through their mouth being open and there tongue hanging out. So remember in hot weather your dog will keep themselves cool by panting – which means more water!

For those of you who read my post on a dogs sense of smell will know that – if a dogs nose is wet their sense of smell will be stronger.

So knowing that, a dog who is hydrated will have a wet nose – and will have a better sense of smell.

You can tell by the dogs skin being elasticated if your pup is hydrated enough. if you pull the skin at the back of the neck back – it should fall back into place in a second or two. If it doesn’t it is very likely that your dog is dehydrated.

Another way you can test it – you can feel their gums. If the gums feel dry and sticky – chances are your pup needs more water!

Saying this, if you have a dog prone to drooling – they might also be dehydrated despite having wet (drool covered) mouths.
