Does My Dog Dream?
Yes! Your dog does dream.
A dog is known to dream after about 20 minutes of falling asleep.
They say that a smaller dog dreams are shorter but more often, and a large dogs dreams are less but longer. Studies show that a dog replays what they did in their day to day activates in their sleep. The same way a human does. There is also a part of the dogs’ brain which encourages movement. This will cause your dog to twitch and move. This doesn’t mean your dog will sleep walk though.
They say a puppy dreams more than most dogs, regardless of age and size.
If you have ever seen a dog dream, you would see that their legs twitch slightly, they tail may also be wagging, small barking sounds or growling. This is the same as if a human were to mumble or move around slightly in their sleep.
Dreaming helps your pup process the things they have learned in the day.
So, this could be something simple, like discovering a cat and chasing them around the house for the first time, barking at the mail man, or thinking about where they buried their bone earlier that day.
It is known that sounds can also trigger a dream – like if they have a squeaky toy. They may dream about this sound. Or they may dream about their toy when they have heard that sound in their sleep.
NIGHTMARES
Research has shown that a dog would be able to have a nightmare – this is based on the fact that a dog dreams in a similar way a human does. So if a human can have a bad dream, they say so can a dog. They say that a dogs’ nightmares would be less vivid and not as visual as a humans’ nightmare. They are also more likely to be based on something the dog has experienced themselves.
