You know how humans rely on their sight for basic survival? Dogs rely heavily on their sense of smell.

It is said that a dogs sense of smell is 60x more accurate than a humans. amazing right?

Something awesome to know is that – different breeds of dogs have different sized membranes. What this means is that your bigger breeds such as a bloodhound is said to have about 300 million smell receptors, and then dachshunds have about 125 million. They say humans only have about 5 Million. So that shows you just how AMAZING that really is!

So now you know why, when you take your dog for a walk, they stop at every post, every tree and every other pavement to smell the urine left behind by other dogs. This is a dogs way of knowing everything about that dog. Its like our facebook!

Something else that is incredible is that when we as humans are in a bad mood, or down or anything other than ourselves we tend to smell different – and this is what dogs pick up. So that’s why your dog magically knows just when you need them!

I tested my dogs the other day, I took a treat and placed it on top of our TV unit at home. It wasn’t visible at all. And all the animals at different times came to smell the unit. They knew something delicious was hiding there! 🙂 Try it yourself 🙂

FACTS YOU PROBABLY DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT YOUR DOGS NOSE

  • Your dogs nose is wet for a reason! This helps your dog capture those smells and hold onto them
  • Dogs have this amazing ability with their nose which allows them to breath through one nostril and smell through the other at the same time. This is due to a fold of tissue inside the nose
  • Due to contrary belief, your dogs don’t actually exhale out their nostrils, the air is released out of the slits on the side of their noses!
  • So you know all those times when you joked about a dog being able to smell your fear? WELL they can! When you fear something, your heart rate goes up, and your blood flow changes – this changes the chemicals in your body. So don’t bother faking that smile.
  • So as disgusting as it may sound you know when your dog somehow always knows where you are? This is due to the fact that humans shed HUGE amounts of dead skin daily. We may not see this and neither do dogs, but they sure can smell it!
  • A dogs nose is a lot like a humans fingerprint. Each one is unique 🙂
