Golden Retrievers date back to the 1800’s

This dog is said to be a mixture of several dogs:

  • A water spaniel was mixed with an existing retriever. Their puppies were then mixed with a bloodhound, the Irish setter and more retrievers. This all created the Golden Retriever.

These dogs were initially bred to be hunting dogs for WildFowl – this breed was perfect for it because to hunt for these animals, the dog would have to be good in both wet and dry land. These dogs are great swimmers and love the water.

These dogs are great family pets as they are extremely tolerant and lovable. They put up with a lot – so this means that they are also great around kids. These dogs are also very smart. These dogs are often used as guide dogs, drug detectors, and tracking dogs.

These dogs take a long time to mature, what this means is that they tend to keep their silly playful attitude for up to four years. This can be awesome for an active family with young kids, they can keep each other busy. Many keep their puppy traits into old age too.

Because of their playfulness, they may sometimes forget how big they are and be a bit clumsy which could lead to them knocking over a child by mistake.

These dogs need daily exercise – they love to play fetch or go for walks. If you have a swimming pool, your pup will happily swim with you.

If you are going to consider this breed, you need to be prepared to have this dog in and around your house – they LOVE to be around you. They need to feel a part of the “pack”.

You need to know that this breed are not a very good watch dog. They tend to wag their tail instead.

Golden Retrievers are a breed that shed A LOT, so daily brushing is necessary.

SIZE:

Male Golden Retrievers grow to approximately 23 Inches tall – and 70 pounds.

Female Golden Retrievers grow to approximately 21 inches tall – and 60 pounds.

Normally these dogs reach their height by one year old and their full weight by two years of age.

COATS:

These dogs have a water repellent coat – they just have a heavy undercoat.

Some of them have wavy coats, and some have straight coats.

These dogs come in a few shades of Gold, as well as a white coat.

These dogs need to be bathed at least once a month – and as mentioned brushed at least once a day.

When it comes to brushing their teeth they need to be brushed at least two or three times a week to stop the build up of tartar.

Trimming their nails – this only needs to be done if the dog doesn’t naturally wear them down when running. If you do need to cut them, once or twice a month is sufficient.
