A Story About Disney – Written By Casey Baker
I grew up in a family full of animal lovers so naturally I became an avid animal lover myself. Growing up, my siblings and I always had dogs in the house; ranging from 2-8 dogs throughout the years! So you can imagine that there was never a dull moment in my household. When I was younger I used to volunteer at the SPCA and even today I am a huge supporter of all animal organizations and not only dogs. But seeing as this post is going up on a puppy website I am going to be talking about the loves of my life. My number one, being Disney “The Legend” Baker. When I was 10 years old a friend of my parents had a Staffy that gave birth to a bunch of puppies. (No this was not a breeded dog and I am against breeding and always have been). I had been begging my parents for a dog for a long while and eventually they decided to talk to their friends and let me pick out a little pup. We decided to get from them because these so-called friends of my parents did not treat their animals well and if the pups were not given to good homes then they were going to be dumped at a pet store where animals are not treated the very best and often do not go to good homes! Now when I pick out a dog, especially a fur baby, I always like to pick out the runt in a litter as I do believe they have the best personalities ever!
After we got her we struggled to pick out a name. My mother ended up suggesting Disney as I really enjoyed Walt Disney movies! It was my responsibility to pick up after her and take her for walks! Now in my family the dogs are treated as equally as the humans in the household. So my child was always on my bed and cuddling up to me on the couch! she kept me so very busy. At that point she was the third pup in the house and the baby at that. I remember he being so naughty and I went through a few pair of clothes and shoes. Her favorite thing to do was to attack you when you were under the covers! It is not love if you don’t come out with a few scratches here and there! My worst and best moment was when my brother and I took her for her first walk. Her collar ended up coming off and my brother and I spent a good few minutes trying to catch this hyperactive, and very fast, puppy! It was a very frightening experience. Needless to say, I never took her for a walk again! Over the years we got many more dogs from the SPCA and she instantly took on the mother figure. She loved taking care of the other pups and playing with them and protecting them.
About 2/3 years ago she started struggling to breathe a bit and a big lump started developing on her chest. The Vet suggested that she get some chest x rays. It was very saddening to hear that she had a tumor on her heart and water in her lungs. The doctor told us that she was too old to get surgery and there was nothing we could do. He said she would pass away before the end of the year. This was in August 2012. She is now 14 years old and still going strong. Now we call her the Legend! I have many other great pups in my life and there is no doubt that I am going to have many more other pups in my life. But Disney will always be my number one. To me, my dogs are one of the reasons I am so happy in life. They will still love you at the end of the day no matter what you do wrong! And they have the best hearts.
