PAW LICKING
Does your puppy lick their paws? This is a common problem. And many people seek help with this. So the big question is why does your puppy lick and chew their paws? This issue needs to be treated and stopped at an early stage so that it doesn’t become a bad habit, as soon as it is a bad habit it will be much harder to stop.
Here are a few reasons why your puppy could be doing licking and chewing their paws
Injury to the Paw (such as cuts, sprains or bruises)
To begin you should take a look at your puppy’s paw to see if you can see any physical evidence of injury. It could be something as simple as a thorn between their toes. You can remove the object bothering your pup and see if the problem still persists.
Then you can check if your puppies paw is warmer than their other paws. Also look for any swelling and redness.
It is important to know that if your puppy has a bacterial injection using creams will only cause the infection to be trapped underneath the skin. The cream will also cause the skin to heal leaving the bacteria inside which in turn will cause more of a problem.
Sometimes it can be as simple as a broken nail. You may find that if you let your puppy’s nails get to long, they can become ingrown and that could push into the paw – this too can cause a lot of discomfort. Make sure that you trim your puppy’s nails every time they need it.
Allergies
Symptoms of an allergy generally include itchiness, swelling and redness.
If you have recently changed what you are feeding your puppy, then this could be the reason for the allergic reaction. You can change their diet and see if the problem still persists.
Your puppy could also have been bitten by an insect, mosquito’s and ticks. It is also possible your puppy could be allergic to things like pollen.
Your puppy could be allergic to grass. You can judge this by if your pup shows sign of irritation after they have been outside to play. Also check that if you are using fertilizers for your grass that this isn’t the cause of the allergy. If the fertilizer is puppy approved, you should still give it some time to absorb properly before letting your puppy go play. I would recommend at least 24 hours after you have watered your lawn.
Different types of soaps could also cause allergies. When washing their toys, bowls and bedding be sure to use a puppy approved soap to ensure that this doesn’t happen.
If your puppy does have an allergy, be sure to get the correct medication from a vet – and don’t try treat it yourself. People often used human medication for their pups – this is incredibly dangerous.
Dry and Cracked Feet
If you live in a place where there is snow – you need to remember that they use chemical and salt on the roads. So often this goes into your pup’s paws when you take them for a walk. The salt dries the paws out very quickly – so its recommended that after you walk your dog rinse or wipe their feet when you get home. You can also apply Vaseline onto the puppy’s paws before your walk, this will keep the feet moist, and will help stop the salt from getting inside. You can also try get dog boots – but not all dogs are willing to wear these. Remember that the snow is cold – and your dog also needs to keep warm.
Fungal Infections
If your puppy constantly licks their paws, their feet will constantly be wet which is the best breeding ground for fungi – especially between their toes. Make sure that very furry dogs are kept well-groomed to make sure there is no excess hair to keep the moisture.
Stress
When a dog is stressed they try do things to keep themselves calm. Chewing their paws is one of these things. Your puppy might also lick their paws when they’re bored. If you give your dog enough exercise and play with them, it will help prevent this.
