Does My Dog Have Fleas?

Here are a few facts to know about fleas before we get started

  • A female flea is known to lay at least 20 eggs per DAY – this means 20000 fleas in just 60 days!!
  • Fleas are known to jump 110 times there length (this is like a human jumping as high as a 30 story building)
  • They say fleas have been around for 165 MILLION YEARS
  • Fleas can survive cold temperatures so they don’t always die in winter.

Firstly, you should be able to see fleas jumping around on your dogs fur. Fleas cause your dog to become restless and itchy. They will become to lick, scratch and chew themselves. They could also shake their head often and scratch their ears,

Fleas are quick, so when searching for them among the fur you might find that they disappear quickly. The more blood the flea sucks the lighter in colour they will look. Fleas can jump very high, so they might also jump off your dog and onto you – so watch out 🙂

Fleas go where they feel most protected and warm, so this is generally under their armpits or their groin area.

So its best to turn your dog around and place them on their backs. Dogs will sometimes scratch themselves open, and cause redness due to the fleas, so it is best to get rid of the problem as soon as possible.

Because of the excessive scratching you may find that your dog might have hair loss in a few places where they are scratching a lot, as well as scabbing from opening their skin.

You are able to buy something called a flea comb – this is a comb which has close little bristles so that the fleas get caught in between them. This is especially helpful on dogs with darker fur and skin. Keep a bowl of water nearby to throw the fleas into 🙂

It might make it easier for you if you put a white towel under you while you are looking for fleas, you will also find that the fleas feces will fall off the dogs fur.

Fleas don’t just sit on your dog. They will be around your house – especially where your dog hangs around a lot.

There is a method you could use to catch any roaming fleas – it is called light trap.

What you do with this is you take a bowl with some sunlight liquid inside it. You place it on the floor near a night light. Fleas tend to jump towards the light and then they by mistake fall into the bowl – and here they will die.
