Oral Disease
Also known and Gum Disease is a known disease in dogs. This is sadly very common in dogs.
Its an inflammation of the structures which support the teeth.
Basically if you don’t brush your dogs teeth often enough, the food and bacteria build up on the teeth and create plaque.
This can form calculus which is basically hardened plaque. This can cause further inflammation and something known as gingivitis.
Gingivitis is basically an early stage of gum disease and you will notice that it causes the gums to be red and swollen.
If this isn’t treated the calculus will build up underneath the gums and separate them from the teeth. There is no coming back from this.
This can lead to bone loss, and pus forming in the gums.
SYMPTOMS
- inflammation
- There are said to be three stages of oral disease – STAGE ONE (Only affection one or two teeth with no gum separation) STAGE TWO (25% attachment loss) STAGE THREE (30% percent attachment loss)
CAUSES
- Poor nutrition
- Dogs who groomed themselves
- Bacteria infections
DIAGNOSIS
- You would have to get an X-Ray to show how bad the damage is under the gums
TREATMENT
- Firstly – if it is early stages you can start by brushing your dogs teeth daily (See Here For More)
- Stage 2/3 will involve cleaning between the gum and the teeth. This will be done with an antibiotic gel which you would get from your vet – this will help make the gap between the teeth and gum smaller.
- In the deep stages you would have to look at bone replacements, and guided tissue regeneration.
Of course it would be best never to be in this situation – so its best to brush your dogs teeth MINIMUM once a week. Preferably once a day 🙂
