Beagles

This breed are a very busy and energetic dog. They are a very good breed for families with kids. They are fun and loving, but they are a very stubborn dog as well – so they require obedience training too.

These dogs were initially bred as track animals to track down rabbits and small game.  Beagles are still used for this purpose today and mostly in the US!

These dogs generally live from roughly 10-15 years. They weigh around 18-30 pounds.

When people talk about puppy eyes – a beagle definitely has those! They have a beautiful softness about them.

A beagle is a friendly dog to other dogs as they are generally a pack animal. They are happy to be anyone’s and everyone’s friend.

There dogs don’t normally tend to bark much as long as you keep the habit under control (this is where obedience training will work well for you and your pup) – so for an apartment dog it could work as long as you give them sufficient exercise. By sufficient exercise i would say you have to walk the pup for at least an hour a day – no matter what the weather is like. If these dogs are left alone for to long they can become bored which leads to very very very destructive behavior.

These dogs rely heavily on their nose – they have around 220 million scent sensors compared to a human who has around 5 million.

.

Because the Beagle has such an efficient nose, these dogs were used in airports to sniff out any unwanted things. This dog worked well here, because its a small cute breed, and so they didn’t generally tend to scare anyone afraid of dogs.

CONS

  • Difficult breed to potty train
  • Get bored easily when left alone leading to destructive behavior
  • These dogs bark a lot – and this is a big reason people give them up for adoption
  • Tend to dig holes, try escaping your home and howling to entertain themselves
  • Big targets to dog thieves. Watch your dog carefully
  • Obedience training recommended to help stubborn behavior
  • There nose is in control, so if they smell something they like….
  • Tend to overeat
  • Not a good guard dog

PROS

  • Friendly loving dogs as they have a gentle nature
  • Great sniffer dogs
  • Great family pets
  • Energetic
  • Small dogs – can stay in a smaller apartment as long as you exercise your dog accordingly
  • Easy to groom
  • Good with other dogs and cats (remember to socialize early in case)

GROOMING

When it comes to grooming your pup – it is recommended that you brush your dog with a rubber mitt at least once a week to remove any loose hair – this also encourages new hair to grow (Which will benefit both you dog and your furniture!). These dogs have a water resistant coat. Because of this, these dogs don’t get dirty easily so unless they decide to be naughty and roll in something yukky – these dogs don’t need frequent baths. These dogs do shed, but their hair is short so with the right amount of brushing you will barely notice it.

EAR CLEANING

It is important to clean these dogs ears often. You should check them at least every two weeks to ensure that infections don’t form. This is because their eyes are downwards facing and there isn’t much air circulation

TEETH

Like any dog breed its important to remember to brush your dogs teeth. This will prevent the tartar build up and will help prevent gum disease. And the best part is it will help your dog have better breath!

NAILS

If this dog gets enough exercise they will generally wear their nails down themselves, but if they don’t then cut them at least once or twice a month
