Does My Dog Have A Cold?
If your dog has a runny nose, is coughing or showing any signs of a “human cold” you may think you have maybe given your dog a cold too. Truth is, you can’t pass this on to your dog. So that means your dog does not have a cold.
The first thing you can check for if your dog starts coughing is something called Canine Cough. People often know this as Kennel Cough. The reason it got the nickname of Kennel cough is that this is extremely contagious, so in a Kennel environment it spread quickly. But saying this, you need to know that your dog can pick this up from anywhere.
Kennel Cough is a dry cough which could also cause your dog to try and gag. This is because it’s almost as if there is something stuck in their throats.
A cough could also be caused by a Bronchial infection. What this is, is basically inflammation of the airways which take air from your throat to your lungs. This is generally caused by viral or bacterial infections. Cleaning products, dust, powdered feed products and airborne fumes could be the cause of these infections leading to Bronchitis. This is also a dry cough. and you will find that your dog will struggle to breathe a bit, and they won’t want to exert themselves. It is very important to catch this early so that it can be treated properly before it causes to much damage. If it gets back the coughing could also cause broken ribs in severe cases.
Cardiac disease can also be a reason for your dog coughing. To give you a quick run down – heart disease often shows no symptoms in the beginning. Unfortunately in most cases the dogs body will only show symptoms once the damage is already done. They will see a change in the dogs health. They will cough, have changes in breathing (shortness of breathe, fast/slow breathing, struggling to breathe), changes in behavior (such as being less playful, getting tired easily, becoming withdrawn and showing signs of depression), losing their appeal for food, weight changes(either gaining or losing), swollen stomach and being restless.
There are a few more reasons which aren’t as common – these include pneumonia, heart-worm or neoplasia (cancer).
Other reasons for a runny nose are – allergic rhinitis, dental disease and neoplasia (though this normally is accommodated with a discharge coming out of the nose as well). These could also be reasons your dog sneezes.
