Epilepsy
There is nothing scarier than seeing your dog having a seizure.
Your dog could lose control of their bowels and or bladder when this does happen – they will be fine one second, and the next their muscles are twitching and their eyes glazed.
This will generally only last a few seconds, but those few seconds may feel like a lifetime!
If your dog has never had a seizure before, you may be a lucky one – and it may be once off. But if this recurring then it is known as epilepsy.
Sometimes there are no signs of these attacks until they happen. The attacks could happen often or they could be far a part. And so because of this they are hard to diagnose. Ignoring the issue thinking its gone could cause issues later on in life. And quite often you find that the tests come back negative – when in fact your dog is actually epileptic.
Sometimes epilepsy is caused by a swollen mass on the brain. These can be checked by a vet neurosurgeon. A regular vet could check several things and they could all come back negative – because they are checking what they know, and these are generally not the right things to check when it comes to epilepsy.
Certain items like lead, insecticides, mold and supplements that some humans take could create changes in the brain which could lead to seizures.
Internally there could be a few underlying problems, like parasite or bacterial infections, head trauma, tumors and strokes.
Certain medications could bring on seizures too, along with kidney and liver infections.
Regardless of your dogs age, finding out whether your dog has epilepsy at an early stage is vital. This is because every time your dog has one of these seizures nerve cells in the brain begin firing randomly. What this means is the more your dog has seizures without trying to manage the problems, the more likely they are to have another one. Making the seizures harder to manage.
So if your dog is having seizures be sure to get it checked out by a neurosurgeon for the fasted best results.
