
Foods Your Dog Should Never Eat
Avocado
- Avo has something called Persin in it. This is toxic to dogs. (for humans who are allergic to avo – they are allergic to the persin)
- Persin is found in the leaves, seeds, bark and the actual fruit itself.
- Remember if you are growing avocados at home – keep your dog away from that area
Alcohol
- Anything containing alcohol is bad for your dog.
- Alcohol has the same effect on humans as it does on dogs
- It can affect the liver and the brain – it just effects them a lot quicker
- Can cause diarrhea, vomiting, coordination problems, struggling to breathe, a coma, or death.
- The smaller the dog the greater the threat
Onions and Garlic
- In any form thee two items are bad for your dog!
- This can destroy red blood cells
- This can then lead to anemia
- Symptoms of this can include, loss of appetite, weakness, vomiting, struggling with breath
Caffeine drinks
- Can lead to caffeine poisoning
- The symptoms for this include weakness, heart palpitations, fits and rapid breathing
- Caffeine can be found in cocoa, chocolate, energy drinks, coffee, and tea.
Grapes and Raisins
- Its unknown as to why these are bad for dogs – but they are known to cause kidney failure
- Symptoms include – vomiting, tired, depressed,
Dairy
- Any dairy products may cause Diarrhea
- Also known to give your pup an allergic reaction (which you would mostly notice by them showing signs of itchiness)
Macadamia nuts
- Can cause muscle tremors, weakness, paralysis, vomiting, high body temperature, fast heart rate
Candy and Gum
- If your candy has Xylitol in it, this can be deadly to your dog
- Can cause blood sugar levels to drop – leading to liver failure.
- Symptoms – Loss of coordination, vomiting, and apathetic
Chocolate
- Theobromine is in chocolate, and this is what is toxic to dogs.
- Symptoms – diarrhea, vomiting, and extreme thirst
- Can cause seizures, death and tremors
Table scraps
- left over meat and bones given to your dog can cause pancreatitis.
- Also, giving your dog a bone can make them choke! and can also break apart causing splinters which may get stuck.
Peaches and Plums
- The issue here lies in the seeds and the pits
- The pits contain Cyanide – this is toxic to humans and dogs.
- Then of course, the pit itself could maybe make your dog choke.
Raw Egg
- Could have Salmonella in it – leading to food poisoning
- There is an enzyme in the egg which messes with the absorption of vitamin B. This can lead to skin and coat problems.
Raw fish and meat
- Can contain bacteria which can lead to food poisoning
- Also certain fish is known to have a parasite which can lead to “fish disease”
- Symptoms – vomiting, fever, swollen lymph nodes
Salt
- Can lead to sodium ion poisoning if to much is eaten. Can also cause excessive thirst and urination
- Can also cause vomiting, diarrhea, depression, tremors, spike in body temperature, and seizures
Sugar
- Sugar can do to your dog what it can do to you – this means it can cause diabetes, obesity and dental problems
Yeast
- As you know, if you have tried to bake bread before the dough rises. It will do this in your dogs stomach too. This can stretch their abdomen and cause pain.
- Also note when yeast ferments it can make alcohol
Human medicines
- acetaminophen or ibuprofen are toxic to dogs
