How Do You Clean Your Dogs Ears?

Generally most dogs require frequent ear cleaning – because this process is easy and quick, you can do it yourself at home if you have all the right tools.

Why Do We Clean Our Dogs Ears?

A dogs ear canal is between 5 and 10cm long. So what this means is that it is easy for dust and muck to enter the easy and not the easiest to get out. If your dogs ear get wet – there is a higher chance of your pup getting an ear infection. This is also because infections like to develop in warm, wet and dark areas. So if your dog swims, it is a good time to clean their ears. Get into the habit, for your sake and theirs.

Dogs with skin allergies are also more prone to getting ear infections – so again frequent cleaning can help prevent this.

Important Things To Know

The ears are sensitive, so its important to use the right equipment and be gentle.

It will be an unpleasant experience for your dog, so until they are used to it (and even then) be patient with them.

Make sure you don’t go deep into the ear especially with the wrong tools – as you can cause more damage than good.

Things You Will Need

  • A ear cleanser
  • Cotton wool
  • Treats

The Treats will help make this habit a lot better. Make your dog enjoy the experience as much as possible. Every time you clean their ears, give them a treat. They will then associate getting their ears cleaned with getting a treat afterwards.

If you don’t have cotton wool, you can alternatively use a piece of gauze. You then put your finger inside the gauze and gently clean them like that – if you would prefer you can use surgical gloves for this, otherwise just wash your hands afterwards.

DON’T DO THE FOLLOWING

NEVER use ear buds. These can very easily hurt your dog. Think about how you would clean your own ears – you can at least feel how deep you are going – and even with humans they say you shouldn’t use those either.

Make sure you have all the tools you need in front of you when you start – you don’t want to get halfway through and realize you are missing something. You want this to run smoothly.

It is suggested that you clean your dogs ears at least once a week.

What Kind Of Ear Cleaners?

There are a few different ear cleaners you can buy – go to your local vet and find one best suited for your dog.

Please refrain from using “human” cleaners. Don’t use things like oils and shampoos. These can cause damage

If your dog already has an ear infections – or you suspect they have one (by redness or scabs) don’t clean them any further without consulting your local vet first. If you do proceed to clean the ears you may cause more damage and worsen the infection.
