How To Stop Your Dog From Jumping On People
Do you know what your dog jumping on you means?
If your dog jumps on you when you arrive home – they think they are the pack leader.
If your dog jumps on your guests when they come over to visit – they are showing your guests that they are the pack leader.
How To Stop This
You need your dog to know that you are the pack leader. You need to be both calm and assertive – your dog will only think they are the pack leader if there is no clear definition that you are. So you need to establish this relationship early on to avoid any confusion for you or your dog.
When a dog runs up and jumps on you when you arrive home – you may think this is amazing! my dog loves me… etc etc, things along those lines. And yes it is great to know your dog loves you. At least that reminds us to embrace and cherish the things we normally take for granted. It may also seem fine and cute as a puppy, but when your dog is an adult it can pose a problem – especially around kids, and especially when you have a big dog!
A dog relies heavily on their sense of smell – especially while they are still puppies and learning everything. Because of this, a dog will try get close to the places where humans have the strongest scents – this is the crotch area and the mouth. So dogs tend to jump up on you to reach these places to find out anything they may have missed out on.
A dog might also be jumping on you because they are anxious and they know by jumping on you they get attention. So they do this so that you pick them up and love them. Even though they know you might shout at them – they would still rather take the chance. Any attention to them is attention. So if your dog does this, by you picking them up every time they will learn this as a pattern and know that every time they do it, you will follow suit, and pick them up.
Recommendations
When you arrive home – don’t overcrowd your pup with attention. Rather remain calm and walk in the door and carry on with whatever it is you have to do. This will soon teach your dog to not be so excited when you come inside the door. Give it a few minutes – when they are more calm, greet them, this will show them that you do still love and appreciate them.
If your dog respects you as the pack leader they will listen to you when you tell them to sit and wait – this will be useful when your guests arrive. Then they won’t jump on them.
Remember to always be assertive, you have to always be the leader. You can’t choose to some days be a leader and take the other days off. There can’t be any confusion – your dog won’t understand this.
If you have ever seen a dog with her puppies, you will see the leadership role is strong. You will notice that any move the puppies make that she may not like – she calmly stops them. They respect this, and they listen – because she is the boss. You need to take the mom role.
