Hypothyroidism
There is a gland in the neck called the thyroid. This gland is responsible for a hormone called thyroxine. This hormone is in control of the metabolism. (Metabolism – the process in which your body turns food into energy)
So basically Hypothyroidism is when the thyroid gland doesn’t make enough of this hormone.
This is common in dogs, and can happen to any breed. It commonly happens in middle aged dogs – so this is between roughly 4-10 years of age. It is also more often than not in medium and large breeds of dogs.
Studies have shown that if you spay or neuter your dog, they will have a higher chance of this. And they are unsure why.
It is possible that your dog could have a tumor which could be shrinking the Thyroid Gland.
It is known that the dogs immune system attacks the thyroid. Which is a big cause for Hypothyroidism.
