Pancreatitis In Dogs

The Pancreas is an organ behind the stomach. It has two functions – help aid metabolism in the body with the help of insulin. And the Pancreas produces enzymes which help digest nutrients.

So pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas.

CAUSES

  • Antibiotics and some medicines
  • Anti Cancer drugs
  • High levels of fat in the blood
  • Obesity
  • Scorpion attacks (Yes the animal)

More common in older dogs, and more so in females than in males.

SYMPTOMS

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Temperature
  • Weight loss
  • Gets tired easily
  • Getting depressed
  • Pain in the stomach area (especially after eating)

DIAGNOSIS

  • Your vet should also check your dog for gallstones
  • They do blood tests – checking insulin and enzyme levels.
  • An ultrasound could be done to check for masses

TREATMENT

  • There is a substance that your vet can give your dog which helps the blood flow.
  • Potassium/electrolyte supplements.
  • If the cause of the pancreatitis is caused by medicine the dog is already taking then they will stop this intake immediately
  • Your dogs foods and liquids will be stopped for a few days and likely put on a fluid diet to avoid dehydration – this will give the pancreas time to heal.
  • Painkillers and medicine for your dog if they need help to stop the vomiting
  • Sometimes antibiotics are given to help prevent or stop infections
  • When the dogs food and water consumption’s return, they will have to follow a diet given by the vet.

PREVENTION’S

  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Avoid high fats
  • Avoid drugs which could help cause inflammation
