Why Does My Dog Have Whiskers?
So, you know that humans rely on their fingers for touch. For dogs, they rely on their face to help them feel.
Whiskers (known also as vibrissae) are long hairs which stick out the sides of your dogs face (on the jaw, muzzle, and above the eyes)
There are follicles at the base of these hairs – which have nerves in them. These will send sensory messages to the brain
The whiskers will help the dog figure out the size, shape and speed of the objects around them
This is how dogs tend to sense danger around them (by detecting the vibrations on their whiskers) – this helps dogs “see” better in the dark too.
It is known that some dogs use their whiskers to see if they can fit into a small space. If their whiskers touch, they know their body won’t fit.
It is said that people who use their dogs as show dogs have been known to cut, or trim their dogs whiskers. This can cause confusion and decreased awareness in your dog.
